Male pattern hair loss in Asian men: what the research shows

How common male pattern hair loss is in Asian men, how it changes with age, the link with smoking, and practical first steps in Petaling Jaya.

Short answerMale pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is common in Asian men and becomes more common with age. A large Korean survey found it in 14.1% of men overall, rising steeply in older age groups, and a Taiwanese study linked heavy smoking with more severe hair loss.

How common is it?

A survey of 10,132 Korean men and women found male pattern hair loss (Norwood type III or above) in 14.1% of men overall. The rate rose with age, from 2.3% of men in their 20s to 46.9% of men over 70 [1].

Smoking and severity

In a community survey of 740 men aged 40 and over in Taiwan, smoking was associated with moderate to severe male pattern hair loss. Men who smoked 20 or more cigarettes a day had higher odds (OR 2.34) than non-smokers after adjusting for age and family history [2]. This is an association, not proof that smoking causes hair loss, but it is one more reason to quit.

How it looks

Typical signs are a receding hairline at the temples, thinning at the crown, and hairs that become finer and shorter over time. Family history is common. Sudden or patchy loss is a different picture and should be checked by a doctor.

First steps

Take clear photos of the hairline and crown under the same light every month. Look after the scalp: keep it clean, avoid harsh scratching, and manage oiliness. Medical options are prescribed by doctors, and a cosmetic programme such as Folli-Heal Plus can sit alongside your doctor’s advice. At our Starling Mall outlet we begin with a magnified scalp analysis so you can see the miniaturised areas before deciding anything.

Want a closer look at your scalp?

Folli-Heal Plus starts every course with a magnified scalp analysis at The Starling Mall, PJ. We explain what we see, then plan sessions with you.

Results vary from person to person.

FAQ

At what age does male pattern hair loss start?

It can start from the late teens or twenties, and the share of affected men rises with every decade of age [1].

Will quitting smoking stop hair loss?

Research shows an association between heavy smoking and more severe hair loss [2]; it does not prove that quitting reverses it. Quitting is still good for your scalp’s blood supply and general health.

Can Folli-Heal Plus help men with thinning crowns?

Folli-Heal Plus is designed to cleanse the scalp and help reactivate follicles so hair looks visibly fuller over a course of sessions. Results vary, and we will tell you honestly after your scalp analysis whether it suits you.
